Botanical Extracts as Natural Pest Repellents in Vegetables

Plant-derived sprays are moving from folk remedy to frontline tool. 2025 reviews show neem and its relatives control 300+ insect species, resist resistance, and stay safe for the people who grow and eat the crop.

As synthetic-pesticide resistance climbs and residue limits tighten, vegetable growers are turning to the oldest pharmacy there is — plants. Botanical extracts, drawn from the secondary metabolites plants make to defend themselves, are now backed by a fast-growing 2025 evidence base for real, field-scale pest control.

Why it matters
Azadirachtin, neem's key limonoid, is effective against more than 300 insect species — and also reaches mites, nematodes and some fungal pathogens.

Neem: the benchmark botanical

Neem remains the most accepted plant-based biopesticide, thanks to the mix of limonoids in its oil and extracts. Crucially, its multi-target action makes it hard for pests to develop resistance — the very problem that retires so many synthetic chemistries.

How botanicals actually stop pests

Unlike a single-shot nerve agent, botanicals work through several overlapping modes — which is why they suppress pests without wiping out the field's beneficial insects overnight.

Safe for the grower and the plate

Safety is the quiet advantage. Azadirachtin's acute oral LD50 in rats is above 5,000 mg/kg — effectively non-toxic to mammals — which keeps synthetic-insecticide use, worker exposure and harvest residues to a minimum. In tomato trials, botanical biopesticides improved marketable quality while remaining cost-effective for smallholders.

A good botanical does not just kill fewer non-targets — it buys time against resistance that no single synthetic can.
